Nosebleed

Stopping a common nosebleed.

In an emergency, call your emergency number first — 112 across the EU. This is general information, not a substitute for hands-on first-aid training or professional medical care. If you are unsure, call for help and follow the dispatcher's instructions.

When to use this

Use for a nosebleed that is not caused by a serious head injury.

Step by step

  1. Sit down and lean slightly forward, not back.
  2. Pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bony bridge, and hold firmly.
  3. Keep pinching for 10–15 minutes without letting go to check, breathing through the mouth.
  4. Release gently after the time is up; if it is still bleeding, pinch for another 10–15 minutes.
  5. Seek medical help if it does not stop after about 30 minutes, is very heavy, or follows a blow to the head.

What not to do

Emergency numbers

112 reaches emergency services across the European Union and much of the world, often even without a SIM or signal from your own network. Some countries keep additional local numbers.
