Nosebleed
Stopping a common nosebleed.
In an emergency, call your emergency number first — 112 across the EU. This is general information, not a substitute for hands-on first-aid training or professional medical care. If you are unsure, call for help and follow the dispatcher's instructions.
When to use this
Use for a nosebleed that is not caused by a serious head injury.
Step by step
- Sit down and lean slightly forward, not back.
- Pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bony bridge, and hold firmly.
- Keep pinching for 10–15 minutes without letting go to check, breathing through the mouth.
- Release gently after the time is up; if it is still bleeding, pinch for another 10–15 minutes.
- Seek medical help if it does not stop after about 30 minutes, is very heavy, or follows a blow to the head.
What not to do
- Do not tilt the head back — it sends blood down the throat.
- Do not lie down or blow the nose for a few hours afterwards.
Emergency numbers
112 reaches emergency services across the European Union and much of the world, often even without a SIM or signal from your own network. Some countries keep additional local numbers.
