Burns and scalds
First aid for heat burns and scalds.
In an emergency, call your emergency number first — 112 across the EU. This is general information, not a substitute for hands-on first-aid training or professional medical care. If you are unsure, call for help and follow the dispatcher's instructions.
When to use this
Use for burns from heat, hot liquids or steam.
Step by step
- Stop the burning and move away from the source; make sure the area is safe.
- Cool the burn under cool (not ice-cold) running water for at least 20 minutes.
- While cooling, gently remove jewellery and clothing near the burn, unless it is stuck to the skin.
- After cooling, cover the burn loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing.
- Seek medical help for burns that are large, deep, on the face, hands, feet or genitals, or caused by chemicals or electricity.
What not to do
- Do not apply ice, butter, toothpaste or creams.
- Do not burst blisters.
Emergency numbers
112 reaches emergency services across the European Union and much of the world, often even without a SIM or signal from your own network. Some countries keep additional local numbers.
